Initially, this post was going to be about my secret love for black licorice,  but after doing some research I stumbled upon surprising news. According to the FDA, Black Licorice can lead to “abnormal heart rhythms, as well as high blood pressure, edema (swelling), lethargy, and congestive heart failure.” Black licorice causes a drop in potassium levels which can cause hypokalemia.  Our parents have been telling us for years- “don’t eat too much candy… its not good for you” – but who would of thought something that comes from a plant can have such damage on the human body?

The first sentence of that WebMD blog post is, “Eat too much candy and you’ll be sorry. Eat too much black licorice, and you could be dead.” Now, I think that is a bit dramatic..? It’s not like we are talking about drinking nail polish remover or a tube of cookie dough a day. Oh, and did I forget to mention that this mostly concerns people 40 and older? In fact, some people use it as a herbal remedy to relieve sore throat, cough, infections, arthritis, lupus, or chronic fatigue syndrome. But of course, there has been no scientific evidence that proves it actually works.

Despite these concerns I am going to keep on munching on  black licorice. Honestly, what person can eat more than 2 ounces a day anyways?!?
